Foliar Spray

What Is a Foliar Spray?

A foliar spray is a type of liquid fertilizer used in agriculture to deliver nutrients directly to plants through their leaves. It’s particularly beneficial for plants with weak or damaged roots that struggle to absorb nutrients from the soil.

Uses of Foliar Sprays

Foliar sprays are applied to the leaves of plants using a sprayer. The optimal time for application is early in the morning when plant activity is high and the risk of nutrient concentration damage due to evaporation is low. It’s advisable to avoid using foliar sprays in high temperatures (above 30 °C or 86 °F) or during rainy conditions, as effectiveness may be reduced.

Features of Foliar Sprays

Pros

Foliar sprays offer quick nutrient absorption, helping weakened plants recover rapidly from adverse conditions like typhoons or heavy rains. They can also be mixed with certain pesticides for simultaneous pest control and fertilization. However, compatibility varies with the type of pesticide used.

Cons

The primary disadvantage is the risk of crop damage if the dilution concentration is too high. Furthermore, the effects of foliar sprays are less enduring compared to soil fertilization, necessitating more frequent application for sustained benefits.

How to Choose Foliar Sprays

Selecting the right foliar spray depends on the specific nutrient deficiencies of the crop and soil conditions. For example, in acidic soils, magnesium and calcium absorption can be challenging, while alkaline soils may inhibit the uptake of iron, copper, zinc, and manganese. Testing soil pH can guide the appropriate choice of foliar spray.

1. Low Sunlight Conditions

During periods with minimal sunlight, such as the rainy season, foliar sprays containing amino acids can aid in compensating for reduced photosynthesis.

2. During Fruit Setting and Flower Bud Differentiation

Phosphoric acid and potassium are crucial during fruit setting and flower bud differentiation. Supplementing these nutrients through foliar sprays can be effective.

3. Addressing Pale Leaves or Withered Leaf Tips

If plants exhibit yellowish leaves or withered tips, it may indicate a nutrient deficiency. Foliar sprays enriched with trace elements like iron and magnesium, in addition to nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potassium, can address these issues.

While foliar sprays act rapidly, their effects are temporary. For sustained growth, it’s beneficial to combine foliar application with soil fertilization.
