Quadsaw

What Is a Quadsaw?

Quadsaws are power tools used for hollowing out and drilling holes in flat boards. The structure of the cutter allows for easy upward work, making it suitable for drilling through plasterboard, plywood, and other materials in ceilings. It is used for installing recessed lighting fixtures and commercial recessed air conditioners, as well as drilling inspection ports in electrical and plumbing work.

In the past, ceiling openings were made with a turning saw. This was difficult work because the work was done looking up and chips of plasterboard and other materials fell down at the same time as they were cut, resulting in chips being covered in dust or getting into the eyes.

The names quadsaw and board cutter differ depending on the manufacturer.

How to Use Quadsaws

Attach the blade according to the material to be cut. There are two types of blades: one for plaster and one for wood.

Adjust the blade depth of cut (protrusion) according to the material to be cut. Adjust the length to the minimum necessary, as setting it too deep may damage the ceiling framework, base material, or cables in the ceiling.

If a dust case is included, install it to prevent dust from scattering during the opening operation. If necessary, install a parallel ruler or other options.

To start the quadsaw, press the blade against the object and open the hole in line with the smear line. Be sure to cut in a straight line, as cutting in a curved line may result in blade breakage.

How to Select Quadsaws

There are two types of quadsaws: a dedicated rechargeable tool type and an attachment type that can be attached to a drill driver or other power tool. Select the one best suited for the job according to battery voltage and capacity, cutting capacity, or accessory functions.

  • Rechargeable Dedicated Tool Type
If you frequently drill holes in ceilings in your business, you should choose a dedicated tool type.

The voltage of quadsaws varies, ranging from 10.8V, 12V, 14.4V, to 18V. The size of the voltage is directly related to the cutting capacity. The higher the voltage, the easier it is to cut or the longer the working time. On the other hand, batteries tend to be larger.

It is also advisable to select the appropriate type for the job by checking the ease of adjusting the cutting position, dust collection capacity, LED light, and other accessory features.

  • Attachment Type
If drilling holes in ceilings is infrequent, choose an attachment type that can be attached to power tools. Since the type of power tools that can be attached differs depending on the product, check the applicable model.
