What Is a Rotary Kiln?

A rotary kiln is a type of kiln that processes materials at high temperatures while rotating. The term originates from Latin, with “kiln” meaning kitchen, indicating a place of heat. Rotary kilns allow for continuous material feeding and processing, offering advantages in efficiency and process control.

Principle of Rotary Kilns

A rotary kiln consists of a rotating drum, support, and drive units, and a burner, each playing a critical role in the kiln’s operation:

1. Rotary Drum

The drum carries materials through the kiln, its interior lined with refractory materials to withstand temperatures exceeding 1,000°C. External water sprays help control the temperature, with steam visible during operation.

2. Support and Drive Unit

This system supports and rotates the kiln drum, often using tires for support and geared motors for rotation. The kiln’s substantial weight, due to steel and brick construction, necessitates robust support structures.

3. Burner

The burner, using fuels like city gas, LNG, or heavy oil, heats the kiln’s interior. Cement kilns, for example, use fuels compatible with high sulfur content due to the raw material’s properties. Air-fuel ratios are carefully managed to ensure optimal combustion.
