Fibre Drums

What Is a Fibre Drum?

Fibre Drums Are Paper Drums

Fibre drums are lightweight, yet durable drums made of paper. These drums, compared to their metal or synthetic resin counterparts, are not only easier to handle but also environmentally friendly, as they can be easily incinerated or recycled. Available in sizes ranging from 1 liter to about 120 liters, fibre drums are a common sight in manufacturing environments.

Fibre Drums Are Used for Powder Storage

Fibre drums are commonly used for storing powders, particularly in industries like plastics and pharmaceuticals. They are typically paired with polyethylene inner bags for added protection and hygiene.

Uses for Fibre Drums

Due to their cost-effectiveness and variety in sizes, fibre drums are a staple in manufacturing sectors. They are primarily used for storing and transporting powders. The paper construction makes them light and convenient for moving large quantities, similar to plastic containers.

Special Fibre Drums for Sensitive Products

Certain fibre drums are specially designed for storing pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, with an emphasis on preventing contamination. However, they are not recommended for liquids like organic solvents due to leakage risks and potential deterioration of the accompanying polyethylene bags.

Characteristics of Fibre Drums

Durable Construction

Fibre drums are constructed by laminating kraft paper and liner paper, similar to that used in corrugated cardboard. This lamination provides sufficient strength. The drums can have either metal or paper lids, though metal lids and bands are often preferred for better sealing.

Some fibre drums meet international standards for transporting hazardous materials, making them suitable for overseas shipping of such items.

Limitations and Adaptability

While fibre drums are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than metal drums, they have limitations. They are not as robust as metal drums for transporting heavy or water-rich products. Products with high moisture content or oxidizable materials require specially treated fibre drums, such as those with water-resistant coatings.

Manufacturers can customize the surface treatment of fibre drums to suit specific products, so it’s advisable to consult with the drum manufacturer for tailored solutions.
