Electric Field Probe

What Is an Electric Field Probe?

An electric field probe is a measuring instrument used to measure the intensity of electric fields.

Commonly used applications include certification work at certification organizations and testing in the research and development process at companies and universities to measure magnetic field strength.

Various manufacturers offer electric field probes with their own unique characteristics, and it is necessary to select the most suitable one for the purpose of use.

In particular, with the background of IoT in various fields, opportunities to use probes have been increasing recently in order to measure the effects of generated magnetic fields on the body with granularity.

Usage of Electric Field Probes

Electric field probes are used to measure magnetic field strength for certification work at certification organizations and for testing in the research and development process at companies and universities.

Various types of electric field probes are available, and it is necessary to select the type that best suits the purpose of use and the environment in which it will be used.

Typical examples of electric field probes are listed below:

  • Radiated radio frequency electromagnetic field immunity testing IEC61000-4-3 3rd Edition certification testing
  • Magnetic field strength measurement in EMS testing

Principle of Electric Field Probes

An electric field probe consists of two parts: a measuring instrument to measure the generated magnetic field and a probe to detect the magnetic field strength.

Since many electric field probes are sold by various manufacturers for various certification tests, it is necessary to select the one that best suits the measurement application.

The IEC recently issued IEC61000-4-3 3rd Edition for radiated radio frequency electromagnetic field immunity testing, which requires compliance with the upper frequency limit of 6 GHz as a test requirement.

The measurement method is based on the logic of using an element capable of detecting equidirectional magnetic fields, inputting the analog values obtained from the element to a dedicated measurement, and calculating the measured values using a computer in the measuring instrument.
