Zinc Aluminum Magnesium Coating

What Is a Zinc Aluminum Magnesium Coating?

A zinc aluminum magnesium coating (ZAM) is a highly corrosion-resistant hot-dip coated steel sheet, comprising zinc (6%), aluminum (6%), and magnesium (3%) plating layers. The coating is named after the initial letters of zinc (Zn), aluminum (Al), and magnesium (Mg). ZAM, commercialized by Nisshin Steel, is recognized as a leading brand of highly corrosion-resistant hot-dip plated steel sheets.

This coating is known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, with minimal rusting and performance surpassing both hot-dip galvanized steel sheets and hot-dip zinc-5% aluminum alloy coated steel sheets by several folds.

Uses of Zinc Aluminum Magnesium Coatings

ZAM coatings are not only corrosion-resistant but also excel in processability and cost-effectiveness. As such, they are increasingly replacing traditional hot-dip galvanized steel sheets, galvalume steel sheets, and other similar products. In the agricultural sector, ZAM materials are employed as structural materials for greenhouses and compost bunkers, and in roofing solutions for poultry houses.

Furthermore, these coatings can be enhanced through specific surface treatments to optimize properties such as workability, weldability, paintability, and designability, based on the intended application. Their wide range of applications extends to construction, civil engineering, automotive, and home appliances, thanks to their high corrosion resistance, processability, and cost efficiency.
