What Is a Speed Wrench?
General wrenches can take a long time to start turning, as they may slip if they do not fit the object securely. A speed wrench is called a speed wrench because it can start turning as soon as the claw is caught.
These wrenches can also be used for a wide range of shapes and sizes of objects to be gripped. For example, it can grip square, hexagonal, and cylindrical shapes, such as pipes, and even partially chipped bolts. They are similar to water pump pliers and pipe wrenches but have the advantage of having a flatter contact surface with the object than both of them, which prevents scratching.
Uses of Speed Wrenches
Speed wrenches have the advantage of a shape that does not limit the object to be used and a short time required for the first action. Therefore, speed wrenches are often used for the removal and installation of bolts, nuts, and pipes related to plumbing and electrical materials.
They are used at a wide range of sites because they can quickly fit and operate when the number of bolts is large or the space is too narrow for the wrench to move.
Furthermore, they can be applied to removing rusted and distorted bolts at construction sites, etc., and to loosening objects that are no longer in their original shape due to missing contact surfaces.
They can also be used for inspection and repair of factory machinery and equipment where speed is required, such as waiting for customers.
How to Choose Speed Wrenches
Whether the speed wrenches can simply hold the object in place is the key point. Also, the shape should be selected depending on the place of use.
- Mouth Opening Dimensions
There are several types of speed wrenches on the market, ranging in width from a minimum diameter of 1/4″ to a little over 1.5″. Select the one that matches the thickness of the object, from the prescribed bolt/nut to a large-diameter pipe. - Head Shape
The head consists of a jaw and a convex part for opening the jaw. When working in tight spaces, the convex part may interfere with other devices, making it impossible to turn the wrench. Some manufacturers have improved the convex part. There are also some types that naturally lead you to the next operation by the reaction of turning. If you work for a long time or work frequently, please make use of them to reduce physical load. - Torque
The strength will increase in proportion to the size of the opening. If the opening dimension is less than 10mm, the torque is about 100 N-m. If the opening dimension is greater than 40mm, the torque is about 500 N-m. Torque should be selected according to the strength of the material while choosing according to the dimensions of the object.
