What Is Industrial Radiography?

Industrial radiography is a critical non-destructive testing (NDT) method employed to inspect and evaluate the integrity of industrial materials and components without causing them damage. This technique uses penetrating X-rays or gamma rays to reveal hidden flaws or inconsistencies within objects.

When objects are exposed to radiation, it passes through them and captures an image that reflects their internal structure. Defects or abnormalities within the material alter the radiation’s path, creating distinct visual indicators on radiographic films, digital detectors, or through computerized analysis systems. Such defects, whether they be cracks, voids, or inclusions, are typically marked by contrast variations like bright spots or shadows on the resulting images.

Industrial radiography has broad applications across several fields, including but not limited to, evaluating aircraft components, assessing the quality of welds, and inspecting pipelines. It is instrumental in detecting various types of internal defects such as cracks in cast materials, welding flaws, or corrosion in pipelines, thereby ensuring products meet quality standards and regulatory safety requirements.
