What Is a Pole Tamper?
A pole tamper is a machine used to compress and shape the ground, among other purposes.
Primarily employed in tasks such as erecting utility poles, the pole tamper compacts the surrounding soil and sand after embedding a pole, ensuring a more robust embedment. The basic mechanism involves utilizing a hydraulic system to rapidly move the plate at the tip, striking the ground and compressing it.
Tampers are also used for compacting concrete and improving soil conditions before constructing buildings. However, the term pole tamper specifically refers to those used for compressing the soil around columnar objects such as utility poles, signs, and fence posts. These tampers are often slender and have a small tip, making them suitable for manual operation, and typically come equipped with a handle.
