Suction Hose

What Is a Suction Hose?

Suction Hose

A suction hose is a hose used to suck in something, such as water or air.

When a liquid flows inside a hose, the inside of the hose is subjected to pressure from the liquid. If the pressure is too great, a normal hose will not be able to withstand the pressure and will bend, blocking the path and preventing the liquid from passing through.

Therefore, suction hoses are characterized by a structure in which hard resin is embedded in a spiral shape to provide strength, even though the hose itself is made of soft resin. This spiral structure of hard resin gives the suction hose high pressure resistance and flexibility.

Uses of Suction Hose

Suction hoses are used to suction, transport, and expel liquids, gases, and muddy water. The field of application is very broad.

Suction hoses are often used in construction and engineering sites, agricultural applications, food processing plants, and sanitation vehicles. For example, when used to discharge water from a water storage tank, a lightweight suction hose is used because the water is discharged from a high position.

On the other hand, when a suction hose is used to suck out muddy water at a civil engineering site, it is necessary to select a sturdier suction hose with higher pressure resistance because it sucks up heavy liquid containing sand.

Principle of Suction Hoses

Suction hoses are made of metal or hard resin embedded in a spiral shape to ensure high pressure resistance characteristics while being lightweight and portable. Suction hoses have two sides to their construction: the suction side, called “suction,” and the delivery side, called “delivery,” which connects the discharge side.

Normal hoses are “single-layer” hoses, which are simply tubular pieces of vinyl chloride material, but suction hoses feature synthetic resins and metals embedded as reinforcement materials in addition to vinyl chloride. For this reason, it is also called a “multi-layer” hose.

Basically, the higher the pressure resistance, the heavier the hose itself. Suction hoses are often moved by people, so the key is to select a hose that is as lightweight as possible and can withstand the pressure received from the delivery side well.

Other Information on Suction Hoses

1. The Difference Between a Suction Hose and a Sanitary Hose

Sunny Hose (Flat Hose)
Sunny hose (flat hose) is made of synthetic fiber and soft polyvinyl chloride, and is folded flat like an ordinary vinyl sheet and rolled up in a circle for storage. It is lightweight, compact, and easy to carry, but its pressure resistance is limited.

Suction Hose
Some suction hoses with high pressure resistance can withstand 1 MP, but there are no suction hoses with that level of pressure resistance. However, suction hoses can be bent only gently due to their structure, whereas Sunny hoses have a high degree of freedom in shape and are very convenient to handle.

Therefore, it is recommended to use both hoses according to the pressure resistance of the liquid to be handled.

2. Suction Hose Materials and Construction Examples

Suction hoses are made of various materials such as resin, metal, and rubber, depending on the manufacturer, but PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and hard resin are commonly used. There are also a wide variety of suction hoses available for different applications.

For example, transparent materials are used to allow the user to see the fluid inside the hose, heat-resistant hoses for use in hot-air workplaces, oil-resistant hoses for food factories, and hoses with excellent antistatic properties that contain a special resin to prevent static electricity.
