What Is a Limestone Fertilizer?

A limestone fertilizer is a type of lime material made from a mineral called dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂), which is heated and ground into a powder or granular form. It mainly comprises calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, along with trace elements such as manganese and boron. Limestone fertilizer specifically refers to magnesium content, whereas lime typically denotes calcium.

Uses of Limestone Fertilizers

Limestone fertilizers are primarily used for neutralizing the pH of acidic soils and supplying essential nutrients like calcium and magnesium to crops. The optimal soil pH for many crops is mildly acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.5). Highly acidic soil can leach harmful aluminum ions, impeding root growth and inhibiting nutrient absorption, including phosphoric acid. Alkaline limestone fertilizers can adjust soil pH, especially in small areas like planters where soil acidity tends to increase more rapidly.

The quantity of limestone fertilizer applied should be carefully calibrated as different crops thrive at specific pH levels. Additionally, it aids in root development and prevents yellowing of leaves by facilitating chlorophyll production.

Granular lime, on the other hand, has a slower onset but offers a prolonged effect. Both forms contain similar nutrient compositions, with granular products being less prone to wind dispersal and easier to spread by hand.

How to Choose Limestone Fertilizers

Granular lime, known for its ease of use and lasting effect, is recommended, although it tends to be more expensive than powdered forms. For larger application areas, granular lime is the more practical choice. Conversely, powdered lime is suitable for smaller areas but should be purchased in quantities that can be used promptly to prevent hardening from moisture exposure.

How to Use Limestone Fertilizers

The standard application rate for limestone fertilizers is between 50 to 100 kg per year for a 10-acre field. However, this can vary based on soil quality and the crops being planted, necessitating a soil pH test for accurate assessment. When used in conjunction with compost or other fertilizers, a two-week interval is advisable to avoid ammonia gas production. The effects of limestone fertilizers typically manifest within one to two weeks, so it’s recommended to apply them about two weeks before planting.

For powdered lime, apply it on a windless day, ensuring even distribution across the field and thorough mixing with the soil. Using a spreader or a cultivator can make this process more efficient. To avoid skin irritation, wear protective gear such as gloves and goggles. Store any leftover fertilizer in a dry place, sealing the bag opening tightly with vinyl string or a similar material.
