Blister Pack

What Is a Blister Pack?

Blister packs are a type of packaging used for retail items such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food products. It involves encasing the product in a pre-formed plastic shell, which is then sealed to a backing material, typically a paperboard or aluminum foil. The transparent plastic allows for product visibility while offering protection from external elements.

Uses of Blister Packs

Blister packs are chosen for their versatility and protective qualities across various industries. They are particularly prevalent in:

  • Pharmaceutical Packaging: Individual dosages of medications are sealed for protection against air and moisture, ensuring product integrity and facilitating accurate dosage.
  • Food Packaging: Used for items such as fruits, vegetables, and meats to protect them during transportation and storage while maintaining freshness.
  • Cosmetics Packaging: Small cosmetic items are packaged in blister packs to protect them and allow consumers to view the product without opening the package.
  • Electronic Component Packaging: Sensitive components like microchips are protected from static electricity and external damage, with the transparent packaging allowing visibility.

Principle of Blister Packs

Blister packs are created using a process called thermoforming, where a plastic sheet is heated and then molded into the shape of the product using a vacuum to ensure a snug fit. Materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS) are commonly used for their thermoformability and clarity. Once formed, the blister is adhered to a backing material to enclose the product completely.

Features of Blister Packs

The primary advantage of blister packs is the visibility of the contents through the clear packaging, making them ideal for display purposes. They also offer excellent protection against contamination and deterioration. The custom fit minimizes product movement within the packaging, reducing damage risk during transportation.

Types of Blister Packs

  • Thermo-Compression Bonded: This variant involves sealing a pre-formed blister to a backing material using heat and pressure, ensuring a secure closure and is suitable for small or flat products.
  • Blister Pack with Inserted Backing Paper: Features a slide-in backing paper, offering versatility for various product thicknesses. This design allows for easy separation of materials for recycling.
  • Shell Pack: Comprises two blister shells that encase the product completely, providing all-around visibility and protection, ideal for showcasing the product or safeguarding three-dimensional items.
