Optical Disk Drive

What Is an Optical Disk Drive?

An optical disk drive is a device that reads and writes data using optical technology.

This drive is compatible with various types of optical media, including CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. These discs feature microscopic pits and land on their surface, forming patterns that represent data.

The drive employs laser technology for its operations. To read data, it projects laser light onto the disc’s surface and then interprets the pattern of reflected light. For writing, it uses laser light to modify the surface, thereby encoding data. Optical disk drives offer significant storage advantages, especially Blu-ray discs, which hold much more data than CDs or DVDs.
