A protocol converter is a network device that converts data between communication protocols.
Protocol converters are crucial when devices or systems within a network operate on distinct protocols, facilitating seamless communication among them. Their operation involves three key steps: receiving data from the sender, converting this data to the receiver’s protocol, and then transmitting the converted data using the sender’s protocol.
There are two types of protocol converters: hardware-based and software-based. Hardware-based converters, which utilize specialized equipment for conversion, are known for their high stability and fast processing speeds, albeit at a higher cost. Software-based converters, on the other hand, run on standard computers and offer a more cost-effective solution, though they may lag in processing speed and stability when compared to their hardware-based counterparts.
