What Is an Electric Coil?

An electric coil is a device designed to transform electricity into magnetism. It features wires wound around a core, creating a magnetic field when electricity passes through. The underlying mechanism is electromagnetic induction, with the magnetic field’s strength depending on the coil’s current flow and turn count. More turns and higher current amplify the magnetic field.

Electric coils have a wide range of applications, including in electromagnets, electric motors, generators, transformers, and relays. These applications leverage electric coils to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy or to manage the transmission and regulation of electrical power. For example, transformers use two coils of differing turn counts to change voltage levels.
