What Is a Vacuum Clamp?

A vacuum clamp is a device that secures a workpiece by creating a vacuum.

Vacuum clamps can securely hold objects with a powerful vacuum force, keeping them firmly in place. Additionally, there is no need to directly touch the object for it to be secured, eliminating the risk of damage.

They can be adapted to objects of various shapes and materials, including flat and curved surfaces. This makes them suitable for transporting and securing objects with complex shapes.

One advantage is that the vacuum system is often integrated into the base unit, eliminating the need for a separate vacuum pump or vacuum ejector. This enhances workability when changing workpieces, as the workpiece can be easily switched by toggling the vacuum state on and off.

Uses of Vacuum Clamps

Vacuum clamps find applications in a wide range of industries, especially when secure and non-destructive workpiece fixation is necessary. They are commonly used in conveying and processing equipment.

They are used to securely hold workpieces in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining centers, enabling high-precision machining through suction-based positioning.

Used for fixing components and products during assembly operations, including electronic equipment boards and components. They are often employed during soldering and wiring work on circuit boards.

3. Printing

In the graphics and printing industry, vacuum clamps are used to process and print large materials such as advertising signs. These materials are typically thin and flexible, requiring precise positioning. Vacuum clamps use vacuum force to secure the material, preventing misalignment due to movement or vibration.

Principle of Vacuum Clamps

The operation of vacuum clamps relies on the creation of a vacuum. A vacuum is a state of near-complete absence of air or gas and is generated using devices like vacuum pumps. The vacuum pump removes air and gases from a sealed container, creating a vacuum inside.

Once a vacuum is generated, a seal is formed between the object and the clamp. Typically, rubber or silicone seal pads are used, attached to the lower part of the vacuum clamp, adhering to the object’s contact surface.

With the seal formed, the vacuum force supplied by the vacuum pump reduces the pressure inside the seal pad. This causes the seal pad to adhere to the object, allowing for suction. The vacuum force holds the object in place securely, preventing movement.

To release the vacuum clamp, the vacuum force must be deactivated. This can be achieved by turning off the vacuum pump or introducing air to the sealing pad. When the vacuum force is released, the contact between the seal pad and the object is broken, allowing for the object’s removal.

When selecting a vacuum clamp, consider the characteristics of the object to be secured, the required fixing force, and the material of the clamp. These factors are essential when choosing a vacuum clamp that fits your needs and budget.
