Job Specific Saw

What Is a Job Specific Saw?

A saw is a tool with a blade (also called a tooth or eye) on the side of a single steel plate.

Job specific saws are used for wood, bamboo, and multi-purpose saws for cutting metal and other materials. There are also ice saws for cutting ice.

A saw consists of a saw plate, which is the metal part with the blade, and a handle (or bundle). The thin part of the saw blade that borders the handle is called the “neck.” The tip of the saw blade is called the “end” and the part near the neck is called the “body.”

There are two types of job specific saws: double-edged with blades on both sides and single-edged with blades on only one side.

How to Use Job Specific Saws for Different Purposes

The materials are cut by pushing or pulling the body of the saw. In Japan, the blade is attached in the pulling direction.

In the case of double-edged saws, the blades on both sides are used for “vertical sawing” and “horizontal sawing,” respectively. In the case of single-edged saws, the blade is often used for “horizontal sawing.” For vertical saw blades, they are used for cutting along the direction of the grain. The blade is large and has a rough grain for better shavings removal. For horizontal sawing, it is used for cutting at right angles to the grain of the wood. It features a small blade with a fine grain.

How to Select Job Specific Saws by Work Use

Select a saw according to the material to be cut and the work to be performed. Selecting a saw for wood is as follows:

  • Double-edged saws can be used for both vertical and horizontal sawing, and are suitable for cutting boards and thick wood.
  • A saw with a body has a very fine blade, so the cut surface is beautifully finished without the use of a file. However, while they are suitable for precision cutting, they are not suitable for thicker woods.
  • Axe-harness saws are characterized by their rounded blade edge, which allows them to cut even in the middle of a board. It is suitable for cutting out pieces of wood.
  • A turning saw has a short blade run and is suited for precision work, such as cutting boards in curved lines. However, they are not suitable for cutting large boards or timbers.
  • Bamboo saws are used for cutting raw bamboo and bamboo crafts. The fine blade allows for smooth cutting without catching fibers.
  • Folding saws are characterized by the fact that the blade can be folded in for storage. It is recommended to carry it with you when you need to carry it around, as you only need to take the blade out when you need to work.
