Flat Head Bit

What Is a Flat Head Bit?

A flat head bit is a tool designed for screws with a flat head or Phillips head. It’s commonly used in conjunction with power tools like electric screwdrivers for efficient screwing at high speeds. Additionally, it can be manually operated by attaching it to a standard screwdriver with a bit holder.

Various sizes and materials of flat head bits are available from different manufacturers.

Uses of Flat Head Bits

Flat head bits are primarily used for driving flathead screws, but they can also be used with some Phillips head screws. They are less common than Phillips head bits but are particularly useful in environments where dust and debris are prevalent, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and around pipes, due to their simple design that resists clogging.

How to Select Flat Head Bits

Size

Flat head bits come in cutting edge sizes ranging from 3 mm to 10 mm and lengths from 1-3/4″ to 3″.

Material

Materials include carbon, nickel, chrome, and molybdenum. Nickel is the most common. Magnetic bits, which hold screws by magnetic force, are useful for working without dropping screws.

Shapes

  • Two-Headed and Double-Headed Bits: These bits have two ends, typically combining a flat head and a Phillips head.
  • Slim Bits: These have a narrower tip, making it easier to see the screw head, especially useful in tight spaces or with thin screws.
  • Stepped Bits: Featuring a narrower shaft for confined spaces, they have a longer slim section but are more prone to breaking.
  • Torsion Bits: Designed with a nipped center, these bits absorb and mitigate the impact of screw tightening.

Selecting the appropriate flat head bit for your application ensures efficient and safe work.
