What Is a Drum Pump?
A drum pump is a large pump designed to extract liquids from drums. It is sized appropriately to fit the dimensions of the drum and is capable of pumping larger volumes of liquid compared to smaller pumps used for polyethylene tanks. Drum pumps are used for various liquids, including kerosene, and come in both rechargeable electric and manual models.
Uses of Drum Pumps
Drum pumps are used to remove liquids from drums in various settings. These liquids range from kerosene and insecticides to cleaning fluids, lubricating oil, and engine oil. However, the suitability of a drum pump depends on the viscosity of the liquid. Generally, drum pumps are more effective with low-viscosity liquids, as highly viscous or sticky substances are challenging to extract and may overload the pump.
Principle of Drum Pumps
Both manual and electric drum pumps have their unique advantages and drawbacks. Manual pumps are advantageous in that they do not require a power source, but extensive hand pumping can be tiring, especially with large volumes. Electric drum pumps automate the pumping process using electric power, making them more convenient, but they depend on a power supply or battery life.
Manual drum pumps typically operate by turning a handle, which is generally easier than pressurized pumps that require pushing. Drum pumps have two hoses: a rigid hose that is submerged in the drum’s liquid and a flexible hose through which the extracted liquid flows out. Due to their size, some drum pumps are designed to be disassembled for storage and reassembled when needed. However, due to their large size, they are not suitable for use with polyethylene tanks.
