What Is a Bearing Lock Nut?
A bearing lock nut is a component used to secure a bearing to a shaft. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the position of the bearing on the shaft, ensuring that the bearing does not shift from its designated location.
Typically, not included with the bearings, hence it is essential to select a bearing lock nut that matches the specifications of both the shaft and the bearing. These nuts are available from bearing manufacturers and can be purchased as standalone items from various suppliers.
Uses of Bearing Lock Nuts
When installing bearings, they are placed into a housing along the outer diameter of the outer ring, with the shaft fitting into the inner diameter. To firmly attach the bearing to the shaft, a shaft shoulder and a bearing lock nut are used. This configuration ensures the bearing is securely held from both sides. Sometimes, a set of washers of the same size may accompany the nut to enhance its anti-loosening capability.
Principles of Bearing Lock Nuts
Bearing lock nuts are designed with a hexagonal exterior and multiple notches along the axial direction, resembling an enlarged version of common DIY bolt and nut systems. This design facilitates easier tightening with appropriate tools.
The accompanying washer, also larger than standard DIY washers, features a convex ‘tongue’ on one side of its inner diameter. A groove on the shaft, into which this convex portion fits, prevents the washer and nut from rotating relative to the shaft, thus avoiding loosening.
By correctly positioning the bearing with the nut and controlling the tightening torque, the axial force on bearings, such as angular contact ball bearings, can be precisely managed. This method is particularly vital in applications requiring high precision.
