Rope Hoist

What Is a Rope Hoist?

Rope Hoists

A rope hoist is a lifting mechanism designed to raise heavy objects with minimal force. While rope hoists are used to lift heavy objects, ropes may not be sufficiently strong for lifting very heavy objects in factory settings. In such cases, chains are often used instead.

As a simple hoisting device, a rope hoist may be suspended from a ceiling or a tripod when installed, making it highly convenient for outdoor use.

Uses of Rope Hoists

Rope hoists are used to effortlessly lift and move objects. They are typically installed on factory ceilings, along with a rail for moving the hoist, though most are chain types. Rope hoists are simple and portable, often stored in warehouses and used as required. They are particularly useful for outdoor tasks where cranes are unnecessary.

They can also be employed to move vehicles stuck in ditches during outdoor work, with one end of the hoist attached to the vehicle and the other to a stable object like a tree.

Principle of Rope Hoists

Rope hoists operate on the principle of a pulley. Using one pulley requires the same force as lifting directly. However, two pulleys halve the required force while doubling the rope length pulled. Three pulleys reduce the lifting force to one-third but triple the length of rope needed. This design enables rope hoists to lift heavy objects that would be challenging for a single person.

Rope hoists are compact enough to be hung from ceilings in frequently used areas, but outdoor or construction site use may require a special tripod for hanging, necessitating preparation.

The number of pulleys varies, with some hoists featuring four or eight pulleys.
