Automatic Transfer Switch

What Is an Automatic Transfer Switch?

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a device that automatically switches from the main power source to a backup power source in case of a power supply anomaly.

When the power supply is interrupted or its quality falls below standards, the ATS automatically connects to the backup power source to maintain electricity supply. Once the power is restored, it automatically switches back to the main power source.

ATS plays a crucial role in places where continuous power supply is essential, such as hospitals, data centers, and communication facilities. It is an efficient and reliable solution, especially in emergencies where immediate response is required.

On the other hand, there are also manual transfer switches, which require physical operation and are chosen in environments where power source switching is infrequent, or where cost is a major concern. The advantage of an automatic transfer switch lies in its ability to automatically detect power interruptions and respond swiftly. Automatic and manual transfer switches are chosen based on a balance of speed and cost, depending on their specific applications.
