What Is a Relay Connector?
Relay connectors are connectors used to relay devices.
Connectors are devices that serve as interfaces for connecting external devices and components in electronic equipment, and are used to connect and disconnect connected devices safely. Among relay connectors, there is an extensive lineup with different specifications for external connections, internal connections, and for automotive and industrial equipment, depending on the application.
Uses of Relay Connectors
Relay connectors are used to safely connect and disconnect devices when relaying.
Most relay connectors for external connections have excellent operability, such as one-touch locking. Relay connectors for internal connections are used for relaying on boards, etc., and are designed to save space and prevent misconnections due to the use of many relay connectors.
Waterproof relay connectors have a spring structure in the contact area and make contact only when the connector fit is completely locked. If the connector fit is incomplete, the repulsive force of the spring will separate the connectors so that they cannot make contact.
Automotive relay connectors have high-performance specifications that are resistant to high voltage and heat and have passed the test conditions corresponding to the standards of the automobiles in which they will be installed.
Principle of Relay Connectors
Connectors generally have a paired structure, with the plug and receptacle portions combined into a single unit which serves to connect and disconnect the connector.
The construction of a connector consists of a contact where both the plug and receptacle are made of an electrically-conductive material, a plastic insulator with insulating properties, and an outer shell that protects the insulator.
The contacts are made of a highly-conductive copper alloy. The plug has a pin contact without a spring, and the receptacle has a socket contact with a spring that is inserted and fitted into the pin contact. The plug is inserted into the receptacle, and the spring in the contact allows a firm connection between the two.
