Polypropylene Band

What Is a Polypropylene Band?

Polypropylene (PP) strapping band, commonly known as a polypropylene band, is a versatile material used in packaging. It aids in transportation and prevents package damage.

While primarily used for packing materials, polypropylene bands are also creatively utilized in making stylish “baskets.”

Uses of Polypropylene Bands

Polypropylene bands are mainly used for bundling packages. Unlike gummed tape, they are wrapped around cardboard and other packing materials for secure holding. They are ideal for bundling multiple packages for easy transfer to a forklift and preventing accidental unbundling. Other uses include binding cables and pipes, in agriculture, and handicrafts. For outdoor use, especially long-term, choosing UV-resistant bands or periodic replacement is necessary.

Features of Polypropylene Bands

Polypropylene bands, also known as “bundling bands” or “cable ties,” come under various trademark names. Their rough surface prevents slipping, and they can be secured using a special band stopper. In factories, these bands are often automatically welded by machines for efficient bundling of large quantities of packaging.

Pros

Polypropylene, the material of PP bands, is resistant to water, heat, acids, and alkalis, ensuring durability. These bands have high breaking strength and can be tightly secured either by hand or machine.

Cons

Exposure to ultraviolet rays can deteriorate PP bands over time, risking package integrity. Improper tightening may lead to slippage, while excessive tightening on softer materials like corrugated cardboard can cause damage.

Types of Polypropylene Bands

Polypropylene bands come in various types, offering features like weather, abrasion, and solvent resistance. Options include re-bondable bands, recycled PP bands, and compact designs for space efficiency. They are available in multiple widths, lengths, and colors, including transparent, white, yellow, black, red, green, purple, and beige.

How to Choose Polypropylene Bands

Selecting the right polypropylene band depends on the packaged item’s weight. For lighter items (around 25 kg), bands with a tensile strength of approximately 980 N (100 kg) are suitable. For heavier items (over 100 kg), choose bands with a minimum strength of 2450 N (250 kg). Consider the band’s thickness, width, and transportation conditions. PET bands made of polyester and polypropylene are recommended for exported packages due to their stretch resistance.

How to Use Polypropylene Bands

Polypropylene bands are suitable for both machine and hand tightening.

Machine Fastening

Packing machines, used for quick bundling, automatically thread, weld, and cut the bands. Ideal for factories and distribution warehouses, these machines handle heavy and long items efficiently, allowing for pallet stacking. Handheld binding machines are also available for welding polypropylene bands.

Hand Tightening

For hand tightening, bands are threaded through a band stopper. This method is commonly used in appliance and furniture stores and by individuals during relocation. A hand-tightening puller can simplify the process. Ensure the special bands are positioned on the sides if stacking is required.
