What Is a Universal Socket?
A universal socket is a versatile tool capable of tightening or loosening various sizes and shapes of screws, bolts, and nuts using a single socket. It features a number of internal spring pins that conform to the shape of the bolt when pressed against it. The pins that do not retract grip the bolt, allowing it to turn.
Similar to universal sockets, spline sockets have internal grooves and can accommodate multiple screw and bolt types by hooking into these grooves.
Uses of Universal Sockets
Universal sockets are primarily used for tightening and loosening fasteners. They can be fitted into ratchet handles for manual work or into power tools like electric screwdrivers and impact drivers using a socket adapter. Universal sockets are particularly convenient with power tools, where applying force from the side rather than the top can be challenging.
They find widespread use in machine part manufacturing, auto repair, construction, electrical installations, and home DIY projects.
How to Choose Universal Sockets
When selecting a universal socket, consider the insertion angle and compatible sizes:
- Tool Insertion Angle: The universal socket must match the angle of the wrench or other tools. Common insertion angles are 9.5 mm or 12.5 mm. If there’s a mismatch, conversion adapters can be used.
- Compatible Sizes: Universal sockets typically come in two sizes: regular (7-19 mm) and jumbo (11-32 mm). It’s important to match the socket size with the screw’s size. For instance, small screws require smaller sockets. Owning multiple sizes for versatility is recommended.
- Other Considerations: While universal sockets are highly adaptable, they may not apply even torque. For tasks requiring precise torque, spline sockets might be preferable. Spline sockets, however, come in limited sizes, so acquiring a set might be beneficial.
