Sand Casting

What Is Sand Casting?

Sand casting is a casting method used to manufacture metal products by pouring molten metal into molds made of sand.

Sand casting consists of three main processes: mold making, casting, and cooling/demolding. First, in mold making, a mixture of sand and binder is compacted into a mold frame to create a cavity in the product’s shape. Next, the casting process involves pouring molten metal into the mold. Finally, once the metal has cooled and solidified, the mold is broken to retrieve the product.

This casting method is used in the manufacture of various products such as automotive parts, machinery components, construction materials, and artworks. The commonly used material is silica sand, while binders like bentonite are used for cohesion. Additionally, casting furnaces are required to melt the metal. It allows for the production of complex-shaped products and enables mass production through the repeated use of the same molds.
