What Is a Thermocouple Extension Wire?
A thermocouple extension wire is a cable used to extend the distance between a thermocouple and a temperature gauge.
To minimize the influence of thermoelectric electromotive force associated with thermocouple extension, various techniques are employed, such as using the same type of metal wire as the thermocouple. It operates based on the thermoelectric effect resulting from the junction of different types of metals. Like thermocouples, thermocouple extension wires also include thermocouple elements, generating voltage corresponding to temperature differences. This voltage is measured by the temperature gauge to calculate the temperature. Since thermocouples and extension wires are composed of the same type of metal wire, the influence of thermoelectric electromotive force is minimized.
Utilized in various settings, they play important roles in industrial temperature measurements and equipment monitoring, medical temperature management and patient monitoring, as well as scientific experiments, research, and meteorological observations.
