What Is a Loop Antenna?
A loop antenna consists of a circular coil and is used in various applications.
This type of antenna is integral in radio and television receivers, radar systems, and wireless communications. It is particularly effective for receiving AM and FM broadcasts, tracking aircraft and ships’ position and velocity, and enabling wireless communication technologies such as mobile phones and Wi-Fi.
The loop antenna operates by detecting the magnetic field component of electromagnetic waves. A single-loop antenna, with a diameter typically around half the wavelength of the radio waves, offers high gain and strong directionality. On the other hand, a multi-loop antenna, with a diameter often exceeding one-quarter of the wavelength, tends to have lower gain and less directionality.
