Impact Socket

What Is an Impact Socket?

Impact sockets are specially designed sockets used with impact wrenches, which are electric or pneumatic tools for attaching and removing hexagonal bolts and nuts. Impact wrenches deliver high-speed rotation and powerful torque at the push of a switch, enabling efficient screw tightening and loosening.

Due to the high torque exerted by impact wrenches, impact sockets are constructed to be thicker than standard sockets.

How to Use Impact Sockets

Impact sockets are attached to the square drive of an impact wrench. When the switch of the impact wrench is pressed with the hexagon socket positioned on a hexagon bolt or nut, the screw can be easily attached or detached. It is important to ensure that the socket is fully inserted into the screw to prevent it from slipping off and damaging the hexagonal corners. Always check that the socket is firmly in place before pressing the switch.

How to Select Impact Sockets

Consider the following when selecting impact sockets:

  • Tip Shape: Impact sockets come in two main shapes: hexagonal hole and hexagonal prism. The hexagonal hole type fits into socket bolts or cap bolts with hexagonal holes. There are also longer versions with extended socket lengths.
  • Tip Size: The socket tip size should match the width across the flats of the screw being turned. Sizes are usually in millimeters, but some sockets are available in inches. Choosing the correct size is crucial to prevent damaging the screw.
  • Insertion Angle Size: The insertion angle refers to the square hole in the socket where the impact wrench’s drive fits. Select a socket with an insertion angle that matches the size of the impact wrench’s drive.
