Dowel Bit

What Is a Dowel Bit?

A dowel bit is a special drill bit used to drill dowel bearing holes. Dowel bits are available for general lumber with either a round shaft or a hexagonal shaft for mounting on the drill.

They have the appropriate effective length (working) for making dowel holes and have a stopper to drill holes of a certain diameter and depth easily. They are used in combination with electric drills, impact drivers, drill drivers, and drilling machines. When used in combination with a dowel marker, they can drill holes at more precise locations.

Uses of Dowel Bits

When using dowels in self-made work, use for drilling dowel holes for wood dowels, shelf-supporting dowels, wood fillers, hidden nails, etc. The bit diameter is directly proportional to the dowel hole diameter. The bit diameter is directly related to the diameter of the dowel hole, so it is necessary to select a bit according to the size of the dowel to be used.

Since the dowel bit has only a tip bit, it is used in combination with an electric drill, impact driver, drill driver, or drilling machine. The specifications of the corresponding screwdriver, such as the corresponding shaft diameter and rotation speed (approximately 3,000 revolutions/minute), are described on the product package.

Principle of Dowel Bits

This drill bit is specially designed for drilling dowel holes when using wooden dowels, etc. It is used in combination with an electric drill, impact driver, drill driver, or drilling machine. When precision work is required, use with a drilling machine is recommended. There are two types of bit connection (shaft) shapes: hexagonal shaft type and round shaft type. The round shaft type is suitable for high-precision work and is used with a drilling machine. The round shaft type is used with a drilling machine for high-precision work.

A dowel bit has a fixed working depth (the depth at which the hole can be drilled), and when the depth is reached, a stopper (an overhang at the top of the bit) stops the movement, making it easy to drill a dowel Bit hole of the required diameter at a fixed depth. On the other hand, if a deeper hole is needed for dowel joints, a through drill bit (woodworking bit, without stopper) should be used. The nominal size of the dowel bit (6, 8, 10, 12 mm, etc.) is directly related to the diameter of the dowel hole, so it should be selected according to the diameter of the dowel to be used. The most common diameters are 8 and 10 mm.
