Coal Tar Epoxy

What Is a Coal Tar Epoxy?

Coal tar epoxies are epoxy resins modified with petroleum or coal-based resins to modify epoxy resin paints.

It is a blackish-brown paint with excellent corrosion resistance and is useful in corrosive environments. However, concerns about the health hazards of tar components in the 1990s led to a gradual decline in its adoption, and the JIS standard was abolished in April 2009.

Currently, coal tar epoxies are widely used as a substitute for tar epoxy resin paints, using modified resins such as coal tar, which are not recognized as carcinogenic.

Applications of Coal Tar Epoxies

1. Anticorrosion Coatings for Ships and Offshore Facilities

Used to protect ships and offshore facilities from seawater and salt damage. Their corrosion and water resistance provide long-term durability and prevent corrosion and deterioration.

2. Pipeline Coatings

Widely used to protect metal parts of underground pipelines and oil field facilities from corrosion. This can extend the life of pipelines and reduce maintenance costs.

3. Internal Coating of Tanks and Storage Facilities

It is also suitable for the internal coating of tanks and storage facilities. This protects the internal metal surfaces and protects them from the effects of corrosion and chemicals.

4. Anticorrosion Coating of Steel Structures

It is also used as an anti-corrosion coating for steel structures such as buildings, bridges, and steel towers. It provides a long-lasting coating and protects steel materials from external weather conditions and environments.

5. Waterproof Coating of Pavement Materials

Applied to asphalt pavement materials, it enhances waterproofing properties. This improves the durability of roads and parking lots.

6. Floor Coating of Industrial Facilities

Also used for floors of industrial facilities such as factories and warehouses, it serves to improve abrasion resistance and chemical resistance. It also provides an anti-slip function.

Characteristics of Coal Tar Epoxies

1. Corrosion Resistance

Its special resin composition provides excellent corrosion resistance. They exhibit resistance to corrosion factors such as seawater and chemicals and provide long-term protection for metal surfaces.

2. Water Resistance

Highly resistant to water, this material does not deteriorate easily even in wet environments. This makes it suitable for anticorrosion coatings for water tanks, storage facilities, ships, etc.

3. Adhesion

The product exhibits excellent adhesion to surfaces such as metals and concrete. This allows it to form a uniform protective film and have a reinforcing effect.

4. Heat Resistance and Abrasion Resistance

With high heat resistance and abrasion resistance, it protects surfaces from high-temperature environments and the effects of friction. It is suitable for coating industrial facilities and machine parts.

5. Chemical Resistance

Resistant to many chemicals and solvents. This makes it suitable for use in chemical processing facilities and industrial environments.

6. Electrical Insulation

Due to its high electrical insulating properties, tar epoxy resin coatings are sometimes used for insulating coatings on electronic components and electrical equipment.

Types of Coal Tar Epoxies

1. General Coal Tar Epoxies

General coal tar epoxies have excellent corrosion and water resistance. They are used for the anti-corrosion coating of metals and the protection of marine facilities. They also have heat resistance, making them suitable for use in high-temperature environments.

2. Highly Corrosion-Resistant Coal Tar Epoxies

This type of paint is especially specialized in preventing metal corrosion. They have excellent resistance to corrosion factors such as salt and acid environments and are used to protect infrastructure such as bridges and pipelines.

3. Highly Heat-Resistant Coal Tar Epoxies

This type of coating is suitable for use in high-temperature environments and is used for corrosion protection and insulation coatings on areas such as hot-air furnaces and chimneys. Because of its excellent heat resistance, it maintains performance even in situations where surfaces are exposed to high temperatures.

4. Coal Tar Epoxies With High Electrical Insulating Properties

This type of coating has high electrical insulation properties and is used for protective coatings on electronic components and electrical equipment. It covers the surface with a corrosion-resistant film while providing electrical insulation.

5. Coal Tar Epoxies for Floor Surfaces

This type of coating is used on floor surfaces and provides abrasion and chemical resistance. It is used in industrial facilities, warehouses, and parking lots to protect floors and improve safety.
