What Is an Amino Alkyd Resin Paint?
Amino alkyd resin paint is a baked-on paint, primarily composed of alkyd resin and amino resin. It commonly uses butylated melamine and urea resins. Known for its quick drying at low temperatures, this paint offers hardness and high gloss, along with low discoloration, excellent weather, chemical, and abrasion resistance, as well as good electrical properties and flame retardancy. However, it has lesser adhesion and alkali resistance compared to epoxy, vinyl, and acrylic resin paints.
Uses of Amino Alkyd Resin Paints
Amino alkyd resin paints are ideal for primers and topcoats on bakeable items, excluding large structures needing on-site painting. They are used on surface-treated steel sheets, automobiles, electrical materials, machinery, metal furniture, office equipment, and other metal products. Acid-hardening variants are excellent for wood products like flooring and furniture, offering scratch resistance, but are unsuitable for metal due to the acidic hardener.
Types of Amino Alkyd Resin Paints
Baking-type amino alkyd resin paints cure through ether bonding between the alkyd resin’s OH group and the amino resin’s CH2OH group during baking. In contrast, acid-curing types use hydrochloric acid or paratoluenesulfonic acid as curing agents. Hydrochloric acid provides quick drying and crack resistance but can corrode steel, while paratoluenesulfonic acid is less corrosive and often used in painting machinery.
The properties of amino alkyd resin paints depend on the resin type, ratio, and curing conditions. Higher resin concentration and baking temperatures increase the film’s hardness and chemical resistance.
