Strain Gauge Amplifier

What Is a Strain Gauge Amplifier?

A strain gauge amplifier is an electronic device designed to convert variations in strain gauge resistance into measurable electrical signals. Strain gauges, which are metal resistors, alter their resistance in response to being stretched or compressed. This amplifier translates those resistance changes into electrical signals that can be fed into a measuring instrument to accurately assess stress or strain on materials.

There are primarily two types of strain gauge amplifiers: the bridge-type and the full bridge-type. The bridge-type is compact and lightweight, making it ideal for portable measuring devices, whereas the full bridge-type offers higher accuracy, making it preferred for precise measurement tasks. These amplifiers find applications across various sectors including machinery strength testing, structural health monitoring, and production process inspections. Their key attributes include the capability to quantify stress or strain, availability in portable formats, and suitability for detailed precision measurements.
